OEM vs ODM vs Private Label: Which Is Right for Your Brand?

OEM, ODM, and private label are three ways to have a product manufactured for your brand. In OEM you supply the formula or specification and the factory produces it; in ODM the factory already owns a ready-made formula that you rebrand and customise; in private label you sell a manufacturer’s existing product under your own label with minimal changes. The right choice depends on whether you own a formula, how fast you need to launch, and how much you want to customise.

For brand owners, importers, and distributors sourcing from a contract manufacturer, choosing the wrong model can add months to your launch or lock you into a product you can’t differentiate. This guide explains each model in plain terms, compares them side by side, and helps you decide which fits your situation.

Quick definitions

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

You bring the formula or specification; the manufacturer produces it. OEM is for brands that already have a proprietary formulation, a specific ingredient profile, or a product concept they want built to spec. You control the recipe, actives, packaging, and claims. It offers the most differentiation and IP ownership, but requires the most input from you and typically a longer development cycle.

ODM (Original Design Manufacturer)

The manufacturer supplies a ready-developed formula that you customise and rebrand. ODM is for brands that want to launch quickly without R&D. You choose from the factory’s existing, market-tested formulations, then adjust flavour, fragrance, colour, concentration, or packaging within what the factory allows. It’s faster and lower-risk than OEM, with moderate differentiation.

Private label

You sell a manufacturer’s existing product under your own brand, largely as-is. Private label is the fastest and lowest-cost route to market: you put your label on a proven stock product. Customisation is usually limited to the label and sometimes packaging. It’s ideal for testing a market or filling a catalogue quickly, with the least differentiation.

How to choose the right model

  • Choose OEM if you own a formula or have a specific product concept, want maximum control and differentiation, and can invest in development and testing. Ideal for brands building a defensible, long-term product line.
  • Choose ODM if you want to launch quickly with a proven formula but still need your product to feel distinct through flavour, fragrance, concentration, or packaging. A strong middle ground for most new and growing brands.
  • Choose private label if you need to get to market fast and cheaply, are testing demand, or are filling out a range with reliable stock products where deep differentiation isn’t the priority.

Many brands blend models over time — starting with ODM or private label to validate demand, then moving to OEM for their hero products once the market is proven.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between OEM and ODM?

In OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), you supply the formula or specification and the factory manufactures it to your requirements. In ODM (Original Design Manufacturer), the factory provides an existing, ready-developed formula that you customise and rebrand. OEM gives you more control and differentiation; ODM is faster and lower-risk.

Is private label the same as OEM?

No. Private label means selling a manufacturer’s existing product under your own brand with minimal changes — usually just your label. OEM means the product is manufactured to your own formula or specification. Private label is faster and cheaper; OEM offers full customisation and IP ownership.

Which model is cheapest to start with?

Private label typically has the lowest upfront cost and effort because you use a proven stock product. ODM is a moderate-cost middle ground, and OEM has the highest upfront investment because it involves formulation and testing — but it delivers the most differentiated, defensible product.

Can I switch from ODM to OEM later?

Yes. Many brands start with ODM or private label to validate demand quickly, then move their best-selling products to OEM for greater differentiation and control once the market is proven. A manufacturer that offers both models makes this transition easier.

Does Edmark Industries offer both OEM and ODM?

Yes. Edmark Industries is an ISO 9001, ISO 22000, GMP, HACCP and Halal-certified OEM and ODM manufacturer in Malaysia, producing health supplements, functional beverages, personal care and home care products for brands exporting worldwide. Request a quotation to discuss your product.
